Passing on the Faith

Here's something exciting. We're getting a whole bunch of really smart and thoughtful people in the same room at Shepherd of the Valley on July 10 at 3 p.m. to think about one big question. You're invited. Here's the question: "Since we're a brand-new, missional church without a lot of existing structures, how can we as a community and parents pass on a faith that's alive to our children?" There will be lots of "experts" there, including you, someone from Luther Seminary, someone from the Youth and Family Institute, and our own Dawn Alitz, who can help us begin to imagine how we will raise our children in the faith together.

For many years now, the research has shown that the traditional models of Sunday School and Confirmation are sort of helpful, but that in reality, faith is formed in the home and in the context of being part of a loving Christian community. It's less about information and institution and more about incarnation "out there" in the world. (There's that word again. It means putting "flesh" on the love and action of Jesus.)

As I talk with people about Light of the World, the first thing out of a lot of parents' mouths is, "What about the kids?" This community is totally committed to raising kids with a faith that is alive. Unlike a lot of churches that have been around for decades, we have a unique gift: We're not bound to practices that we're learning may not be the most effective. So we get to start with what we're learning is a really good way for us all to grow together in the faith.

Some of the world's brightest and best are going to be in that room on July 10. This is a moment that will not come again. If you can be there, please come. There will be nursery for kids and supper for all at 5.

So, here's a question for you to respond to: What is your deepest desire for your child/children? Don't be afraid. Blog away.
